Twenty years of commitment to South-South trade

The Global Network of Export-Import Banks and Development Finance Institutions (G-NEXID), which is celebrating its twentieth anniversary, held its 21st Annual General Meeting on 14 September 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland. The chosen theme was "Scaling up South-South Trade and Development Finance through Strategic Partnerships".

The meeting brought together export-import banks, development finance institutions, public development banks, strategic partners, and international organizations from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Participants examined ways to expand trade and development finance, strengthen regional value chains, and promote co-financing and risk sharing.

An advocacy for cooperation

Dr George Agyekum Donkor, Honorary President of G-NEXID and President of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), stressed the need for enhanced cooperation between development finance institutions and export-import banks.

In his view, closer collaboration, more co-financing, and knowledge sharing are essential to achieve a measurable impact on development and sustainable prosperity.

A publication on trade between countries of the South

The Assembly was marked by the official launch of the network's flagship publication, "Strengthening Trade and Related Financing for the Global South". The book sheds light on the opportunities and challenges of South-South trade and development finance. It emphasizes the role of innovative financing, sustainability, and strategic partnerships in the economic transformation of developing countries.

G-NEXID reaffirmed its role as a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange between development finance institutions and export credit agencies, and invites new institutions to join the network.

Among the speakers were representatives from:

  • the World Trade Organization (WTO);
  • the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD);
  • the Swiss Export Risk Insurance (SERV);
  • the West African Development Bank (BOAD);
  • Afreximbank;
  • the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).
