Abidjan hosts ECOWAS training against gender-based violence

Institutional synergy for the protection of victims

On 16 and 17 September 2026, the Ivorian economic capital hosted a capacity-building session for front-line actors in the fight against gender-based violence. This workshop specifically targeted judicial police officers from the police and gendarmerie, as well as focal points from the justice sector.

The organization of this meeting was based on collaboration between three major entities: the ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC), the Ivorian Ministry of Women, Family and Children, and the Akwaba Mousso Association. Participants worked on improving the practical skills needed to optimize the identification of victims, their referral, and their comprehensive support through the various care services.

Strategic priorities of the regional organization

For the community institution, this training session is part of an ongoing framework of action aimed at eradicating violence against vulnerable populations. The fight against these practices constitutes an essential line of work for the development of member states.

The representative of the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Côte d'Ivoire, Fathmah Mahan, reaffirmed the organization's position on this issue.

This vision is shared by the management of the EGDC, which advocates absolute rigor in the face of violations committed against women and girls in the regional territory.

Toward a coordinated multisectoral response

The Director of the EGDC, Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, emphasized the need to apply a zero-tolerance policy toward gender-based violence. According to her, personnel in direct contact with survivors must combine the rigor of legal procedures with confidential support that respects the dignity of those affected.

The proceedings also highlighted the importance of decompartmentalizing interventions between security, justice, health, and social affairs. The effectiveness of actions depends on the fluidity of victim referral mechanisms and collaboration between public structures and civil society organizations.
